If you legally live in the UK, you apply for a short-stay (Type C) Switzerland Schengen visa through VFS Global — Switzerland's visa application partner in the UK, not TLScontact — and the Swiss Embassy in London makes the decision. You start the form on the official swiss-visa.ch portal, then book a VFS Global appointment in London, Manchester or Edinburgh and attend in person to give biometrics and hand in your documents.

Fees
Switzerland Schengen visa fee from the UK & the xVisa price
Your Switzerland visa cost is the government/consular fee, plus the VFS Global charge, plus the xVisa service for booking your appointment and preparing your file. The price is the same for everyone — you pay for the work and the appointment, never for "priority". The three amounts stay separate; we don't roll them into one headline figure.
- AutoBooking takes the earliest VFS Global slot across London, Manchester and Edinburgh: median ~4 days from request to a booked appointment.
- A short-stay Switzerland Schengen visa is usually decided within about 15 calendar days of your appointment, longer in peak season or if the consulate asks for more.
- You can apply up to 6 months before you travel. Apply early: Swiss ski-season and summer slots are the first to go.
- Government / consular visa fee
- €90
- Children aged 6 to 12 pay €45, and children under 6 pay nothing.
- Set by the Schengen states in euro and collected in local currency by the visa centre on the consulate's behalf.
- VFS Global service charge
- Varies by centre and is added by the centre itself, separately from the visa fee.
- xVisa service
- Slot monitoring
- £35

Appointments
Switzerland visa appointment in the UK — get an earlier slot
Switzerland is a small country with sharp demand windows: VFS appointments in London, Manchester and Edinburgh tighten fastest before the winter ski season — Zermatt, Verbier, St Moritz — and again for the alpine summer, plus the business calendar around Geneva and Zurich. Rather than refresh three VFS pages hoping a Swiss slot appears, xVisa's AutoBooking watches all three around the clock, secures the earliest appointment that fits your dates and pings you the moment new dates open.
Types of visa
Types of Switzerland Schengen visa & purpose of visit
Most travellers from the UK apply for a short-stay (Type C) Switzerland Schengen visa. VFS Global lists it under a few purpose-based categories, and which one fits changes your documents and cover letter — so xVisa tailors your checklist to the right type.
Tourism
A holiday, skiing or sightseeing in Switzerland: itinerary, accommodation (hotel or chalet booking) and proof of funds.
Business
Meetings, a conference or a trade event in Geneva, Zurich or Basel, plus an invitation letter from the Swiss company or organiser.
Visiting family & friends
A host in Switzerland, plus their invitation and, where they sponsor the stay, a formal declaration of sponsorship / guarantee (Verpflichtungserklärung / déclaration de prise en charge).
Documents
Switzerland visa requirements & documents (from the UK)
A Switzerland Schengen visa from the UK needs a valid passport, proof that you legally live in the UK, the swiss-visa.ch application form, travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover valid across Switzerland and the Schengen area, a Schengen-spec photo, a return itinerary, your Swiss accommodation and proof of funds — with a cover letter recommended. The items below sit on top of the shared Schengen checklist; the ones in bold are the Switzerland-specific ones people miss.
- Passport valid 3+ months beyond your return date, with 2 blank pages.
- Proof of UK residence (BRP / visa / settled status) valid 3+ months beyond return.
- Completed swiss-visa.ch application form
- Schengen-spec photo.
- Travel medical insurance, min €30,000 covervalid in Switzerland and the Schengen area.
- Return flight itinerary.
- Swiss accommodationhotel or chalet booking, or a host's invitation with a declaration of sponsorship for a private stay.
- Proof of funds (bank statements).
- Cover letter setting out your Switzerland itinerary.
- Employment / study proof, where relevant.
Common mistakes when applying for Switzerland from the UK
- Assuming Switzerland uses TLScontact. In the UK, Switzerland is handled by VFS Global, not TLScontact — the reverse of France and Germany. Going to the wrong provider means the wrong centre and the wrong booking system.
- Thinking Switzerland isn't Schengen. Switzerland is a full Schengen member, so you need a Schengen visa (not a separate Swiss one) — but it isn't in the EU, which trips people up on the paperwork.
- Applying to Switzerland when it isn't your main destination. On a multi-country Alpine trip, book Switzerland only if you'll spend the most nights there (or it's your first entry with nights split evenly) — otherwise apply to France, Italy or Austria instead.
- Forgetting the host's declaration of sponsorship for a private family/friend stay — an invitation alone may not be enough.
- Under-insuring. Travel medical cover below €30,000 is a common refusal reason.
- Booking one centre only. London, Manchester and Edinburgh open Swiss dates at different times — checking just one leaves earlier slots on the table. (This is exactly what AutoBooking removes.)
- Leaving it late for the ski season. Swiss winter and summer slots are the first to fill; last-minute applications risk missing the trip.
