If you legally live in the UK, you apply for a short-stay (Type C) Finland Schengen visa through VFS Global — Finland's visa application partner in the UK — and the Finnish embassy/consulate makes the decision. Finland runs VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh; xVisa's AutoBooking watches all three at once and takes the earliest appointment that fits your trip, then prepares your file.

Appointments
Finland visa appointment in the UK — get an earlier slot
Finland visa appointments at VFS Global in London, Manchester and Edinburgh get tight around the busy season — winter travel to Lapland and the Christmas and Northern-Lights months in particular, plus summer breaks to Helsinki. Rather than refreshing three VFS booking pages for hours, xVisa's AutoBooking watches all of them around the clock and secures the earliest Finland appointment that fits your travel dates — and alerts you the moment dates reopen.
Where to apply
The Finnish embassy & when Finland is your main destination
Apply for a Finland visa when Finland is your main destination — the country where you'll spend the most nights — or your country of first entry if your nights are split equally (handy if you're touring the Nordics or Baltics and Finland is the way in). Applications for the Finnish embassy/consulate in the UK are handled through VFS Global visa application centres: you attend in person for biometrics and document submission, and the Finnish embassy makes the decision. xVisa picks the centre with the earliest slot for your dates.

Types of visa
Types of Finland Schengen visa & purpose of visit
Airport transit and long-stay Type D national visas (work, residence, long study) follow a different process with Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) and aren't covered here. EU/EEA/Swiss family-member applications also follow a separate route. Not sure which you need? Our team confirms the right Finland visa type for your trip.

Business
Meetings, conferences or events: plus an invitation letter from the Finnish company.
Visiting family & friends
A host in Finland: plus an invitation and, where relevant, proof of accommodation.
Study (short courses)
A short course or exchange under 90 days: plus the enrolment / acceptance letter.
Documents
Finland visa requirements & documents (from the UK)
A Finland Schengen visa from the UK needs a valid passport, proof of UK residence, the standard Schengen application form, travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover, a Schengen-spec photo, a return itinerary, accommodation in Finland and proof of funds; a cover letter is recommended.
- Passport valid 3+ months beyond your return date, with 2 blank pages
- Proof of UK residence (BRP / visa) valid beyond your return date
- Completed Schengen application form (the form Finland accepts)
- Schengen-spec photo
- Travel medical insurancemin €30,000 cover
- Return flight itinerary
- Accommodation in Finland (hotel booking / host invitation)
- Proof of funds (bank statements)
- Cover letter with your Finland itinerary
- Employment / study proof, where relevant
- Confirm whether documents must be submitted in English or Finnish/Swedish, and whether any translation is required.
- For visiting family/friends: the current Finnish invitation-letter expectation.
- Finland's current VFS Global appointment and biometric-submission steps for each UK centre.
- Any purpose-specific extras for business (Finnish host invitation) and study (acceptance letter).
Common mistakes when applying for Finland from the UK
- Avoid these
- Applying to Finland when it isn't your main destination. On a multi-country trip you apply to the country with the most nights (or first entry if equal) — not simply the first flight you booked.
- Leaving it until the winter rush. Lapland, Christmas and aurora-season demand tightens VFS Global slots — start monitoring early rather than fighting for a last-minute date.
- Picking the wrong purpose. Finland offers several short-stay categories; tourism, business, family visit and study each need a different cover letter and supporting documents.
- Under-covered insurance. Travel medical insurance below the Schengen minimum (€30,000) is a common refusal reason.
- Residence proof that expires too soon. Your UK residence document should cover your travel dates comfortably.
- Assuming an appointment means approval. The appointment is the start — the Finnish embassy decides the visa, typically 2–6 weeks after biometrics.
