Heading to Lisbon, Porto, Madeira or the Algarve? Fees

Portugal Schengen visa fee from the UK & the xVisa price

Your Portugal visa cost is the government fee, plus any VFS Global charge, plus the xVisa service for booking your appointment and preparing your file. It's the same price for everyone — you pay for the work and the appointment, never for "priority". The three amounts stay separate; we don't roll them into one headline number.

  • AutoBooking takes the earliest VFS slot across London, Manchester and Edinburgh: median ~4 days from request to a booked appointment.
  • A short-stay Portugal Schengen visa is usually decided within about 15 calendar days of your appointment, and can run longer in peak season.
  • You can apply up to 6 months before you travel. Apply early: Portugal appointments in the UK get scarce around the summer and holidays.

  • Book VFS Global appointments on your behalf, honestly and fairly.
  • Prepare complete, error-checked Portugal applications.
  • Show real, data-based wait times — including "no dates right now" when that's the truth.

What we never do

  • Sell queue-jumping or "premium" slots.
  • Claim to sway the Portuguese consulate's decision.
  • Guarantee a visa or a specific appointment date.

Appointments

Portugal visa appointment in the UK — get an earlier slot

VFS Global appointments for Portugal fill up in waves — hardest of all before the Algarve summer, over Easter and around New Year, when Portugal is one of the most-requested Schengen routes out of the UK. Rather than watch three VFS calendars and hope a slot drops, let xVisa's AutoBooking monitor London, Manchester and Edinburgh around the clock, secure the earliest Portugal appointment that fits your dates, and ping you the instant fresh dates reopen.

Types of visa

Types of Portugal Schengen visa & purpose of visit

Almost everyone applying from the UK needs a short-stay (Type C) Portugal Schengen visa. Which one fits comes down to your purpose of visit — the documents and cover letter change with it, and xVisa tailors your checklist to the right type.

Tourism

A holiday in the Algarve, a city break in Lisbon or Porto, or a trip to Madeira: itinerary, accommodation and proof of funds.

Business

Meetings, a conference or an event, with an invitation letter from the Portuguese company or host.

Visiting family & friends

A host in Portugal, plus an invitation and, for a private stay, a Termo de Responsabilidade (a sponsor's declaration of responsibility).

Documents

Portugal visa requirements & documents (from the UK)

A Portugal Schengen visa from the UK needs a valid passport, proof that you legally live in the UK, the completed Schengen application form (submitted via VFS Global), travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 of cover, a Schengen-spec photo, a return itinerary, your accommodation in Portugal and proof of funds — with a cover letter recommended. The items below sit on top of the shared Schengen checklist; the ones in bold are the Portugal-specific ones people miss.

  • Passport valid 3+ months beyond your return date, with 2 blank pages.
  • Proof of UK residence (BRP / visa / settled status) valid 3+ months beyond return.
  • Completed Schengen visa application form, submitted through the VFS Global Portugal service.
  • Two Schengen-spec photos.
  • Travel medical insurance, min €30,000 coverfor the whole Schengen area.
  • Return / round-trip flight reservation.
  • Accommodation in Portugalhotel bookings, or for a private stay a host's Termo de Responsabilidade (declaration of responsibility).
  • Proof of sufficient funds / means of subsistenceto Portugal's stated amounts.
  • Cover letter setting out your Portugal itinerary.
  • Employment / study proof, where relevant.

Common mistakes when applying for Portugal from the UK

  • Going to BLS or TLScontact by mistake. In the UK, Portugal is handled by VFS Global — not BLS International and not TLScontact. Searching "BLS Portugal" or "TLScontact Portugal" out of habit sends you to the wrong centre and the wrong booking system.
  • Booking a visa you don't need. A British passport gets you into Portugal visa-free for short stays — this page is for other passports held by UK residents.
  • Applying to Portugal when it isn't your main destination. On a multi-stop Iberia trip, if you'll spend more nights in Spain, apply to Spain. Book Portugal only when Portugal is where you'll spend the most nights (or your first point of entry if the split is even).
  • Forgetting the Termo de Responsabilidade for a private family/friend stay — a casual invitation won't stand in for it.
  • Under-insuring. Travel medical cover below €30,000 is a common refusal reason.
  • Checking only one centre. London, Manchester and Edinburgh open Portugal dates at different times — watching just one leaves earlier slots on the table. (This is exactly what AutoBooking removes.)
  • Leaving it late. Portugal is a busy summer route from the UK — Algarve and Madeira slots before the school holidays go first.
