If you legally live in the UK and hold a passport that needs a Schengen visa, you apply for a short-stay (Type C) Malta visa through VFS Global — Malta's visa application partner in the UK — and the Maltese consular authority makes the decision. You book a VFS appointment in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, attend in person to give your biometrics and hand in your documents.

Fees
Malta Schengen visa fee from the UK & the xVisa price
Your Malta visa cost is the government fee, plus any VFS Global charge, plus the xVisa service for booking your appointment and preparing your file. The price is the same for everyone — you pay for the work and the appointment, never for "priority" or a "premium" slot. The three amounts stay separate; we don't roll them into one headline figure.
- AutoBooking takes the earliest VFS slot across London, Manchester and Edinburgh: median ~4 days from request to a booked appointment.
- A short-stay Malta Schengen visa is usually decided within about 15 calendar days of your appointment, longer in peak season or if extra documents are asked for.
- You can apply up to 6 months before you travel. Because Malta runs a small UK operation, applying early matters even though it's a quieter route.
- Government visa fee
- €90
- Children aged 6 to 12 pay €45, and children under 6 pay nothing.
- Set by the Schengen states in euro and collected in local currency by the visa centre on the consulate's behalf.
- VFS Global service charge
- Varies by centre and is added by the centre itself, separately from the visa fee.
- xVisa service
- Slot monitoring
- £35
- Full application service
- £100

- £30

Appointments
Malta visa appointment in the UK — get the earliest slot
Don't let Malta's smaller search demand fool you: with only three UK centres and a modest number of slots released, a Malta appointment can be harder to pin down than a big-country route — especially in the run-up to summer, when Malta fills with sun-seekers. Instead of hoping a date drops on one VFS calendar, xVisa's AutoBooking watches London, Manchester and Edinburgh around the clock and takes the earliest Malta appointment that fits your dates — then pings you the moment new dates open.
Types of visa
Types of Malta Schengen visa & purpose of visit
Almost everyone applying from the UK needs a short-stay (Type C) Malta Schengen visa. Which one fits depends on your purpose of visit — the documents and cover letter change with it, and xVisa tailors your checklist to the right type.
Tourism
A holiday in Malta or Gozo: itinerary, hotel or accommodation booking and proof of funds. Malta is a summer favourite, so book well ahead of the season.
Business
Meetings, a conference or a trip tied to Malta's finance, iGaming or maritime sectors, plus an invitation letter from the Maltese company.
Visiting family & friends
A host in Malta, plus an invitation and, where the stay is private, a sponsorship or accommodation declaration from your host.
Documents
Malta visa requirements & documents (from the UK)
A Malta Schengen visa from the UK needs a valid passport, proof that you legally live in the UK, the completed Schengen application form for Malta, travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover, a Schengen-spec photo, a return itinerary, confirmed accommodation in Malta and proof of funds — with a cover letter recommended. The items below sit on top of the shared Schengen checklist; the ones in bold are the ones Malta applicants most often miss.
- Passport valid 3+ months beyond your return date, with 2 blank pages.
- Proof of UK residence (BRP / visa / settled status) valid 3+ months beyond return.
- Completed Schengen application form for Maltalodged via VFS Global for the Maltese consular service.
- Schengen-spec photo.
- Travel medical insurance, min €30,000 covervalid across the whole Schengen area.
- Confirmed accommodation in Maltahotel booking, or a host's sponsorship/accommodation declaration for a private stay.
- Return flight itinerary (and, where relevant, inter-island travel within Malta).
- Proof of funds (bank statements).
- Cover letter setting out your Malta itinerary and purpose.
- Employment / study proof, where relevant.
Common mistakes when applying for Malta from the UK
- Going to the wrong operator. In the UK, Malta is handled by VFS Global — not TLScontact and not BLS. Searching "TLScontact Malta" or "BLS Malta" sends you to the wrong booking system.
- Applying to Malta when it isn't your main destination. If you'll spend more nights in Italy, Sicily or elsewhere, apply to that country instead — Malta only when Malta is where you'll be most, or your first point of entry.
- Assuming a quiet route means easy slots. Malta gets far fewer UK searches than France or Spain, but its UK operation is small and releases few appointments — quieter demand doesn't mean plentiful dates.
- Under-insuring. Travel medical cover below €30,000 across the Schengen area is a common refusal reason.
- Booking one centre only. London, Manchester and Edinburgh open Malta dates at different times — checking just one leaves earlier slots on the table. (This is exactly what AutoBooking removes.)
- Leaving it late for a summer trip. Malta is a peak-summer destination; apply months ahead if you're travelling between late spring and September.
