VFS says Portugal appointments in the US are opened during the first week of each month and given out first come, first served, subject to what the consulate releases — and it tells applicants to keep checking because availability changes. If you live in one of the 26 states (plus DC) under the Washington DC embassy's jurisdiction, you can take a slot in Washington DC, Chicago, Houston or Miami, so the earliest date may not be in your nearest city. xVisa's AutoBooking follows all the centers your state may use and books the first date that fits your trip.

Process

How a Portugal visa application from the US works

  1. Check where you apply

Tell us your state and travel dates. We confirm whether you book with VFS (and at which centers) or with a Portuguese consulate directly.

  2. Get your Portugal checklist

Built for your trip purpose, including the proof of US address and US status Portugal asks for.

  3. We check your file

Forms, photos, bank statements and bookings reviewed against the Portuguese consulate's checklist before you book.

  4. We book VFS

AutoBooking watches all the VFS centers you're allowed to use, including the monthly release, and takes the earliest slot that fits.

  5. Attend & get your decision

Biometrics and documents in person at VFS; the embassy or consulate decides — allow at least three weeks.

Fees

Portugal Schengen visa fee from the US & the xVisa price

What you pay splits three ways, and each part goes to someone different: Portugal's consular fee, VFS Global's service fee per application, and — only if you use us — xVisa's fee for booking the appointment and checking your file. There are no hidden fees: you're charged for the booking and the file check, nothing on top.

How you pay depends on the center. At the Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Miami and Houston centers the visa fee, the VFS fee and any optional extras are paid directly to VFS by credit or debit card, and the VFS fee is charged online when you book. For San Francisco, VFS lists card or money order/cashier's check — check your appointment letter for how the visa fee must be paid.

Children under 6 pay no consular fee, and some applicants are exempt — among them pupils, students and accompanying teachers on study trips, researchers, and the spouse, children or, in some cases, parents of an EU or EEA citizen they're traveling with. Consular and VFS fees are non-refundable once paid.

  • The appointment is usually the longest wait — and the part xVisa takes off your hands.

Appointments

Portugal visa appointment in the US — get an earlier slot

Portugal's VFS calendars in the US fill in bursts: VFS says new appointments are opened during the first week of each month, subject to what the consulate releases, and go first come, first served; after that the openings are unpredictable. AutoBooking books the earliest Portugal appointment that suits your dates at any center open to you and alerts you when new dates appear. VFS lets you cancel or reschedule up to 48 hours before, so an early booking doesn't lock you in.

Where to apply

Which VFS center or Portuguese consulate serves your state

For Portugal, where you live decides where you apply. Most US residents book at a VFS Global center: the Embassy of Portugal in Washington DC and the Consulates General in New York and San Francisco take their visa applications through VFS. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New England apart from Connecticut are different — Portugal's consulates in Newark, Boston and New Bedford take those applications themselves (Rhode Island residents apply in New Bedford). Apply to Portugal when it's your main destination (the most nights, or your first entry if nights are split evenly): on a Lisbon-and-Seville trip with more nights in Spain, you'd apply to Spain instead.

Washington DC — VFS Global

Main center for the Embassy of Portugal's jurisdiction: 26 states plus DC.

Houston — VFS Global

Optional center for anyone in the Washington DC jurisdiction — often worth watching alongside DC.

Miami (Coral Gables) — VFS Global

Optional center for the Washington DC jurisdiction; the office is in Coral Gables.

Chicago — VFS Global

Optional center for anyone in the Washington DC jurisdiction (26 states plus DC).

New York — VFS Global

For New York, Connecticut and Michigan residents.

San Francisco — VFS Global

For 13 Western states and the Pacific territories; VFS lists card or money order/cashier's check as payment methods here.

Types of visa

Portugal short-stay (Type C) visa: which purpose fits your trip

Long-stay national visas — D7 (passive income or retirement), digital nomad, study, work or job-seeker — aren't Schengen visas: the consulate issues an entry visa and the residence permit follows from AIMA in Portugal. The same VFS centers take those appointments and our monitoring covers the national categories VFS lists, but the checklist and fees on this page are for the short-stay visa.

Tourism

Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira or the Azores: itinerary, hotel bookings for the whole stay and proof of funds.

Business

Meetings, trade fairs or training with a company in Portugal: VFS expects an invitation from the Portuguese company, otherwise you apply as a tourist.

Visiting family & friends

An invitation letter plus a copy of your host's ID or residence permit; if you stay with them, their signed statement of responsibility can stand in for hotel bookings and proof of funds.

Family of EU or EEA citizens
